Dave Matthews feels right at home at the Gorge.

Let them come for me with pitchforks, the righteous indignant who haven't heard a Dave Matthews Band song since a three-minute radio edit in , these smug experts who've never seen the band exist. Welcome, those who decided that popular always equals bad, unlike, say, Prince, Beyonce or the Grateful Dead, those niche, underground artists. Cheers to those who once knew an insufferable frat guy who wore a Dave Matthews Band t-shirt and decided if that guy was a fan, it Must Be Bad™. (I assume those people also gave up beer, ice cream and outdoor sports, not wanting to be associated with things frat guys might love.) Hat tip to those for whom hating this band constitutes an identity on Twitter. Public Service Announcement: It's and no one is forcing you to attend to music you don't savor . Let people love what they love! Repeat: Good for you, not for me!

You're getting distracted by the haters, a friend says. What execute you love?

Dave Matthews appreciates his voice more now than ever

Dave Matthews is in the zone. He's in his home studio in Seattle alongside his producer, Rob Evans, cranking through several takes of unused songs he's playing for our acoustic performance, checking in occasionally to produce sure the friendly folks at World Cafe were easy . Affable and self-deprecating in equal measure, I must advise you the rumors are true: Dave really is the nicest guy in the music industry.

We're visiting Seattle to talk about his band's recent album, Walk Around The Moon. Content Dave Matthews Band release day, by the way, to all those who celebrate. Conceived during the pandemic, it's a record Dave says he created "to put more joy into the world."

I sat down with him to talk about the album, why he appreciates his voice more now than ever, and I asked him about his more overzealous supporters — his thoughts might surprise you. Hear our chat and a live in-studio acoustic performance above.

Dave Matthews

The public face of the improvisational, jazz/jam fusion-based Dave Matthews Band (DMB), Dave Matthews enjoyed a religiously devoted fanbase who lived for the band's tours, albums and exist music recordings. Launching from the college/fraternity circuit and powered by a bootleg-swapping, Matthews-approved community, the Grammy-winning group's nonstop tours made it one of the most financially successful acts of all time.

Notching smash albums like Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash, as well as hit singles such as "Ants Marching," "Crash Into Me" and "The Vacuum Between," DMB became more than a beloved band, but a Grateful Dead-type movement whose followers treasured Matthews's funky, rough-edged sound and Earth-friendly ethos. Matthews himself remained the good-natured global citizen at the center of it all, releasing a solo album Some Devil, collaborating with a slew of talented musicians, and making minor film appearances in features like "Because of Winn-Dixie" () and several Adam Sandler crowd-pleasers including "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" () and "Just Go
