Thomas Roma&#;s book In The Vale Of Cashmere is probably familiar to you. It has had enjoyed widespread press and positive comments. And rightly so. It&#;s one of my favourite books of the year. I just did a review of the book and project for Vantage.

Roma’s arresting photos move inside the Vale of Cashmere a renowned casual hook-up spot that has, for decades, hidden in plain sight on the northern side of Modern York&#;s prospect Park&#;an overgrown, knotty pocket of criss-crossing paths that is of Brooklyn’s most active gay cruising spots. The Vale of Cashmere is commonly, but not exclusively, frequented by African American and Caribbean men.

Not only are Roma&#;s portraits&#;that take us on elongated and repeated walks through the foliage and dappled light&#;wonderful so too is the contributing essay by G. Winston James. Between the two of them we are able to encounter, pass or pause with the men who meet among those trees.

I write:

James reminds us that sex is an outing designated for private spaces, namely the domestic cosmos of the home. But for gay

“When I got there, I found the park filled with men in the same horny, hungry declare of mind I was in … I can’t remember ever seeing so many gorgeous black men in any one place,” Rory Buchanan wrote in his short story “Summer Chills,” from Brother to Brother: New Writings by Black Gay Men. Buchanan was describing the Vale of Cashmere, a secluded patch of wilderness in Prospect Park that’s been the unofficial locus of queer cruising in Brooklyn since the s. A lifelong Brooklynite, Roma hadn’t visited the Vale since the s, when would often drop off his foremost friend and roommate, Carl, on a quiet stretch of Flatbush Avenue. He’d watch him climb through a hole in a fence to go join men in the park. In , Carl died of AIDS in Roma’s arms. The series of black-and-w

After a decade of publishing gay travel content online and publishing our book, we finally got to experience our 7th continent in December with Out Adventures. It was utterly life-changing.

We embarked on this adventure aboard the stunning Ultramarine Ship, operated by Quark Expeditions, a team of polar legends who understand their ice fond drag queens perceive their contouring. This wasn’t just another trip. It was THE trip, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit the most remote place on Earth with a fabulous group of gay travelers.

Candid shots of Mexico City’s actual gay underground

David Graham had been struggling to find inspiration when he first arrived in Mexico. The New York-based location scout had just begun a photography mentorship with the legendary Alex and Rebecca Norris Webb, and was on the look-out for stories to shoot.

But in a country soaked with stimuli, the choice to settle on one was almost too overwhelming – and it was only during a encounter with a friend in a Mexico City gay bar that an idea finally struck.

“I had photographed a male couple embracing in front of a neon sign that read ‘Puto’ [harsh slang for gay],” Graham remembers. “My friend then recounted a story about how the last car in the Mexico Town subways became a gay cruising ground at night. When I told Alex this story and showed him the photograph, he had said he had never heard or seen anything about Mexico City LGBT life. He immediately said: ‘There is your project!’”

The legend of “the last car” had apparently been widely whispered about in the city, but few knew whether there was any truth to the rumours. Armed wit
