Orlando Shooting: 50 killed, LGBT American&#;s in grief

The gay, womxn loving womxn and transgender society has seen aggression before, from Harvey Milk to Matthew Shepard, and an ever-lengthening list of transgender women. But never anything fancy this.

Sunday&#;s massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, grimly changed the equation, stirring communal fears and swiftly prompting tighter security at gay self-acceptance events. The gunman, identified as Omar Mateen of Fort Pierce, Florida, told his father he had been disturbed by seeing two men kissing in Miami.

The attack on the Pulse nightclub, which killed at least 50 people and was the deadliest U.S. mass shooting to go out, occurred amid numerous events nationwide celebrating LGBT Pride Month. In several other cities hosting events on Sunday including block parties in Boston and a festival in Washington authorities beefed up the police presence.

Omar Mateen was a regular at Orlando club, used many gay ‘hook-up’ apps: Report

Omar Mateen, the gunman who massacred 49 people at the Pulse club in Orlando was himself a regular at the gay nightspot, four clubgoers told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday.

“Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” Ty Smith told the Sentinel, referring to the year-old slain shooter.

Smith told the paper that he saw Mateen inside at least a dozen times.

“We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times,” Smith said. “He told us he had a wife and child.”

Another Pulse regular, Kevin West, told the Los Angeles Times that Mateen messaged him on and off for a year using a gay chat app.

And other clubgoers told local media and MSNBC that Mateen had been using multiple gay apps, including Grindr, with shared acquaintances to “hook up”.
