GLOSSARY
The terms and definitions below are always evolving, transforming and often imply different things to different people. They are provided below as a starting point for discussion and understanding. This Glossary has been collectively built and created by the staff members of the LGBTQIA Resource Center since the early s.
These are not universal definitions. This glossary is provided to assist give others a more thorough but not entirely comprehensive understanding of the significance of these terms. You may even consider asking someone what they mean when they use a phrase, especially when they use it to describe their self. Ultimately it is most important that each individual explain themselves for themselves and therefore also define a word for themselves.

What Does LGBTQIA2+ Mean & Its Importance?
The LGBTQIA2+ community, also known as the Rainbow community, are people who are allied with the LGBTQIA2+ movement or determine as an lesbian, queer, transgender, etc. People from the LGBTQIA2+ community reach in from all walks of life and contain people of all races and ethnicities, all ages, all socioeconomic statuses, and from all parts of the country. To separate it down some more, LGBTQIA2+ is an abbreviation that stands for: womxn loving womxn, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming (or sometimes questioning), intersexual, asexual and two-spirited. The plus-sign signifies a number of other identities, and is included to hold the abbreviation brief when written out; the complete abbreviation is LGBTTTQQIAA. The primary reason why the LGBTQIA2+ communtiy and pronouns matter is because it creates a positive impact on mental health, heartfelt well-being and quality of life for those a part or allied with the group.

The way the LGBTQIA+ community interacts – both with each other and with the world around us – is constantly changing. We try to include everyone and to make everyone feel seen and understood.
What Does LGBTQIA+ Mean?
For many years, the umbrella term “gay” was used to describe the community.
Now, many people worry about how to come out, but coming out before the s wasn’t even an option, as many states illegalized what they called “homosexuality” or “sodomy.” There was also no acronym at all, restricting the inclusivity of our community.

What Is the &#;I&#; in LGBTQIA+?
June is National LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Somewhat recently, the Celebration acronym has adopted more letters. Many sources now refer to the LGBTQIA+ community, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender nonconforming, queer, intersex, and asexual. While some of those words are often discussed, others may need some further explanation. We turned to Laurel A. Beck, PhD, Senior Instructor in CU Denver’s Department of Integrative Biology to explain the “I” in LGBTQIA+.
First things first. One aspect that makes all the letters in LGBTQ+ difficult for some people to perceive is the difference between sex and gender.
